The Providence Athenaeum has recently inaugurated The Athenaeum Salons, featuring a different presenter every Friday evening. This week’s salonieres are Teny Gross, Executive Director, and Jane Jellison, Director of Training, at the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence. Teny and Jane will engage attendees in a discussion about the connections between their recent readings on the Peloponnesian Wars and the work they do in conflict resolution among the city’s residents, particularly youth who are gang members or simply live with a high threat of violence in their lives.
The salon goes from 5:00 to 6:30 or 7pm, with “drop-in” arrival to accommodate people’s different schedules for leaving work. We have drinks, hors d’ouevres, and mingling for the first twenty minutes to half hour, then everyone takes a seat at café tables scattered throughout the room, and we introduce the presenters at around 5:30. The presenters speak briefly about their backgrounds and work, and then start the conversation – and it is definitely a conversation, and not a formal lecture. The format is meant to encourage dialogue, questioning, and give-and-take. The dynamic is very informal, and gives people a chance to get to know each other as well as the presenters, and it’s very much driven by a back-and-forth between everyone there. The salon is open to Athenaeum members and their guests, and it’s free, and I am delighted to invite you to be my guest on February 17th, in honor of your interest in the work that Jane and Teny do. Your voice and perspective would add greatly to the conversation, so I hope you will be able to join us.
Please let me know whether you will be able to attend, and feel free to call me with any questions. I look forward to seeing you!
