Director of Development
The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence’s mission is to teach by word and example the principles and practices of nonviolence and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions.
The Institute for Nonviolence seeks an experienced professional to be responsible for raising philanthropic funds for the organization’s operating and program objectives. This newly created position affords the Director of Development the opportunity to establish a sound, ethical and proficient fundraising infrastructure for the five-year-old Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence.
Personal Qualifications:
• Demonstrated comfort with a preference for working in a collaborative style in a team environment
• Broad understanding of fund development theory and methods as well as significant direct experience
Reports to: Executive Director
Supervises: Vista volunteers assigned to Development
Key Relationships: Director of Training, Operations Manager, Assistant to the Executive Director, Office Manager, Board of Directors (especially Fund Development Committee)
Responsibilities:
• Raising funds through grants, annual and major gifts, planned giving, special events and capital campaigns
• Developing and executing annual and long-range fund development plans
• Establishing and overseeing development budgets and management
• Engaging and training volunteers in donor cultivation and solicitation
• Creating and carrying out fundraising communications, such as acknowledgements and direct mail appeals
Candidates must be highly organized, motivated, flexible and enthusiastic about functioning in a fast-paced, multi-faceted organization. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. At least five years of professional fundraising and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree are mandatory. Prior and/or current participation in a professional fundraising association is desirable. Salary and benefits are competitive.
