The mission of the Institute for Study and Practice of Nonviolence
is to teach by word and example the principles and practices of
nonviolence, and to foster a community that addresses potentially
violent situations with nonviolent solutions.
There was one major campaign in the history of the United States that brought many people to a crossroads. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. waged nonviolent campaigns against social injustice, racism, segregation and oppression. Nonviolence is a more permanent solution to eliminating social evils. It is based on social growth, human reconciliation and changing the conditions that created these evils.
Rhode Island is at a crossroads. Many groups/organizations have been established in the past ten years in reaction to the violence that has permeated our state. These organizations are working toward the same end result, but are often insolated from each other and from those in need.
Dr. King once said, “The soft-minded man always fears change. For him the greatest pain is that of a new idea."
The Nonviolence Institute is filled with strong-willed people who welcome change. Our foundation lies in the teachings of Dr. King.
